Title: Duplicate email entries are getting the wrong error message.

I'm having reports of several people telling me that our signup form is rejecting their email due to it being improperly formatted, despite the fact that they ARE entering it correctly.

The REAL problem is that they are already in the database - but that is not the error message that is generated. Why would the program be "confused" in this way?
