A run down of suggestions.
« on: May 02, 2004, 08:22:53 pm »
Here is a list of suggestions which I believe is useful for the next version of listmail. This should keep you busy... ;)

Arranged from most important to least important
- open-rate tracking
- one-click reset bounces
- global unsubscribe
- subscribers can change their profiles
- one-click or date range purge for removed/bounced users
- header/footer
- copy follow-ups to other lists
- sent message archive
- server and local time display

I'll add more suggestions in the future as soon as I get more ideas.

P.S. I've found some of these features in Autoresponder Plus and phplist.com

I wanted headers/footers and I came up with a solution (at least temporary until Dean adds header/footer options) by adding message codes called !header and !footer.

I added html code to these message codes and I added them to the top of my subscribe success pages, unsubscribe success pages etc through the custom html option.

I also created !emailheader and !emailfooter message codes with text to add to text email with any header footer additions I wanted.

I like your other suggestions too.

Thanks

Thanks for your suggestions

- open-rate tracking

This will soon be a feature.  For now, you can use a 3rd party script I developed:
http://listmailpro.com/forum/index.php?topic=7.0

- one-click reset bounces

A good suggestion.  Currently there isn't a way to view how many times a user has bounced or if they are in danger of being removed, let alone a method to reset them.

- global unsubscribe

I have been tossing ideas around about global or multi-list unsubscription.  I agree, it needs to be addressed ASAP.

- subscribers can change their profiles

Coming eventually.  I want to keep the Custom HTML theme of the program for this so it's a bit difficult and time consuming.  I hope to have this in a near future release once some more often-requested and long-missing features are implemented.

- one-click or date range purge for removed/bounced users

An advanced user query option could come with the advent of the new powerful rule-based sending feature which will be in the very next release.

- header/footer

I may not implement these since I allow for message codes of the type "Custom Text" which can be used almost as easily.

- copy follow-ups to other lists

A "Copy List" feature, to copy everything from one list except users, is coming in the next release.

- sent message archive

Sent message viewing is coming in the next release.  Archived message viewing will take some time as I want to keep with the Custom HTML theme of the program.

- server and local time display

I have always wanted to make the program display in the viewing user's time zone.  I've also been thinking about a "server status" page which will show all of the important paths, configuration options, etc. of the server.  A good suggestion, too.

Keep 'em coming!

Hi Dean, don't know if these have already been mentioned.

- Allow subscribers to change name/email address

- to be able to give out a 'subscribe' email address eg 'for more details send a blank email to my email@mydomain.com'

- Allow subscribers to change name/email address

This was suggested above as "user profiles".

- to be able to give out a 'subscribe' email address eg 'for more details send a blank email to my email@mydomain.com'

This is already possible with the .CGI scripts included with ListMail in the /cgi folder of the ZIP.  Check out this page for the documentation:

Please let me know if you have any more suggestions!

Can the program suppress blank fields? Example, if I put in a custom field but in certain records the field is blank, can the program supress that field? This would be useful in printing addresses if I had a Address_2 field, but sometimes that field was not used or needed. Instead of having a blank line printed there, it would supress that one and not print it in the email that is sent out.

Dean,

it's been a while since 1.77b came out - when can we finally see a new version... especially one with global unsubscribe, this is a HUGE must have for anyone running multiple newsletters.

HUGE plus would be if this could be cross referenced to additional installs - for a true global unsubscribe or atleaast have admin be able to export/import a list of global unsubscribers.

Also - on a personal note - did you get my last email re: ezinecertify.com ?

Thanks,

Hi,

I've tried to get Dean to give an ETA that was accurate
on a new version for months - good luck on that one...

Have a search here for previous ETA posts...
Thanks,

Just thought of this one today.

I don't know if it is on the list but...

global exclusions or blacklists.  email addresses or entire domains that can't be used.

I am a member of a group of list owners with a reach of over 3million subscribers.  We were talking and to my relief they are all having trouble emailing to hotmail and msn addresses.

This is due to restrictions they put on the servers.  It seems that if I send out 50 every 5 min they accept just fine but if it goes much faster than that it is a real issue.

Many of the members of this group have implemented a feature that keeps their subscribers from using .aol .hotmail and .msn addresses.  There are other domains that are trouble some as well.

It can really bog a server down if you have several thousand email addresses from these hosts.  Your queue will fill up and it will crash the server.  Not to mention that the bounces from your own mail server not being able to connect will cause your list to disapear fast.

From what I can tell it is not a black list on the IP.  It is simply some type of volume lock down.  It is temporary as well.

The ability to ban addresses and domains is coming in the next update.

When sending as much email as you do you should consider employing multiple IP addresses for sending.  This is tricky, the only one who I know knows how to do it is at http://simscripts.com

http://www.simscripts.com/exim_multiple_interfaces_patch.html

http://www.simscripts.com/qmail_multiple_interfaces_patch.html

Obtain 10-20 IPs for your server and use the patch (or your own mod) to automatically send email from a cycling list of IPs.  You will not be temporarily blocked (as often?) for sending thousands of emails per minute from the same IP.
