In light of the new queue protection table (implemented in v1.85) I can implement this background sending feature by default with little or not adverse effect. Previously, I had worried about users resuming an active queue - now, you can't do that!
I should probably add the ignore_user_abort() line to dailymail, too, while I'm at it.
