Quick Tip: How to do an RSS feed

Hi Guys & Gals,

I've been doing this for ages and a few people have asked me about this lately, so I thought I'd post it here for anyone who was interested.

If you want to make an RSS feed out of your autoresponder sequence there is a really easy way to do it.

Just set up a blog that supports posts via email and subscribe your blog to your list!

Now, whenever you send a mail to your list, you will also be posting to your blog, adding newsletter archives to your site, updating your RSS feed and sending notification pings to the world.

It's all hands free.

Cool eh?

PS. I recommend using either Blogger or  WordPress to set up your blog - both are free.

Thank you for the suggestion, it sounds great!

In WordPress I see that under the Writing menu then under Writing Options there is a place for your Mail server, Login name and Password.

Do I just create an email alias using one of the three random strings?

Is is not necessary to create a .forward and pipe the email somewhere
to be parsed?

...because of all the SPAM laws, we have to put "remove" links in all of our messages. This means that if our autoresponder posts to the blog, and hence updates our feed, that the REMOVE link will also be a part of that post.

Anyone could then click that link and remove the "RSS READER" subscriber from the list, hence stopping the feed.

Any suggestions on getting around that aside from creating a duplicate list where the !remove link is not added?

What about a user option "don't show remove links"...  You might also modify admin.php directly so that certain email addresses are skipped when processing certain codes.

Well, that would definitely handle it...though I'm not sure I could safely tweak the code. I'll have a look though.

Bob,

I make two lists.

One list has only the blog, Wordpress, subscribed to the list. This list does
not have the remove link and I post the full article to the blog.

The second list is an abridged post that goes out to my subscribers only. The abridged or second list has the removal link plus a summary of my full post and a link to my full article and a link to my RSS feed at the blog.


I hope that addresses your problem with the removal link.

I'm revisiting this now, ready to do SOMETHING to get this to work. Given that I know the user ID of the RSS feed, isn't there something I could just put in the first line of rem.php that would kill the process, or present some kind of "You can't delete this..." type of message and return to the page it came from? Like if($u=ef4150) ??

Just by way of an update, I did a simple redirect back to the main Index page of the blog if someone pastes the remove code in the address bar and the  User is the "RSS Reader" user in ListMail and it works just great. 3 lines of code.

Wordpess has a post via email plugin that lets you assign areas to skip in an email. I have it set to skip my remove link. The plugin is called postie.

I agree. I see competitors that are offering this now and it's very tempting - but since I'm so deeply established with ListMail, it's a tough decision to move. However, less and less of my email is actually reaching my recipients anymore, so RSS is an option I WILL persue, be it through ListMail or some other option. I already use Listmail as mentioned in this post to generate an RSS feed, however, clearly when a new person subscribes to the feed, they immediately have access to ALL the previously sent mail, and are not routed through it in order as intended.

Agreed. I think--An email management program without an rss feed seems stuck in the last century. I came to the forum today looking for news on rss feeds, as I've been doing for months. Eventually I'll give up and move on.

PS, For the present--listmailpro does just what it is advertised to do so I'm staying with it. For the future--I'm just hoping to see rss feeds included soon.
