Sending messages to a list periodically but only to NEW subs
« on: April 06, 2006, 07:20:38 pm »
I have a list that I do manually today using a different mailing software program but would prefer to use this script as I do with some other lists.

My question is If I have a weekly newsletter that I send out say every Friday. There are new subscribers added manually during the week between the past mailing and the next. I DO want those "NEW" subscribers to receive the latest mailing but I don't want to RESEND the mailing to the entire group. How would I be able to do that?

In the other software that I want to discontinue there is an option of "Send to those who did not receive this message before" and one that is "Re-Send to the entire group"

ListMail doesn't currently have an option for this.  You may be able to do what you want using "User Selection" with a rule based on the "Date Added" field.  The drawbacks are as follows:

1. You would need to update the rule to the new date before each mailout - this could actually be accomplished automatically with a pre-dailymail custom script inclusion.

2. For best results you would need to set your dailymail task to exactly midnight and only send scheduled messages to your selection.

This is quite a difficult work-around...  Unfortunately, what you want to do will not be possible until ListMail tracks each and every delivered message.

I may be able to implement such tracking without it being too database-intensive.  It's on the list.  I like the option you mentioned and think it would be great for ListMail.

The hard part about the option would be setting and determining the "ID" of each message, which isn't currently tracked.  Right now, messages with the same subject and message might be 'duplicated' and appear in the saved table, sent table, and/or followup table at the same time all with different IDs.  So the difficult part is determing when to create the ID and when to 'use it' when mailing with the option.

I would love to discuss the details of such a feature with you and other clients.  I'm going to move this post to the Suggestions forum so that it gets more attention.
