The Filter Duplicate Email Addresses option...
« on: November 05, 2006, 05:26:12 am »
Hi Dean,

I searched for this on the forum before submitting this and found no threads... so here goes...

In the "Edit Selections" options it says, "The Filter Duplicate Email Addresses option prevents duplicate email addresses from showing up in the result, which is useful when mailing multiple lists."

My question is, HOW do the duplicate emails get filtered when combining lists? In other words what the's filtering process/criteria? Is it based on the time stamp of when a subscriber came into that list (the earlier one stays, the older one gets removed), etc?

My problem is I have several lists, but the customer input into the fields are different in each list, even though the custom field 'name' was the same. So if I was to do a mail merge with the customer fields I want included, which customer field would show up once the "Filter Duplicate Email Addresses" selection was made to mutiple lists?

For example, I have 2 lists.

List 1 data fields are:

fname,lname,email,birthdate,product

List 2 data fields are the same:

fname,lname,email,birthdate,product

As you can see, the fields are the same, but the output would be different if they had purchased a diffferent "product" using custom fields.

So, if the SAME person was on list #1 AND list #2, and I did a filter to remove duplicate addresses and THEN I used a code function for my custom field in the email, which is "!product" - BUT they bought 2 different products, eg. "My Product 1" and "My Product 2"... if I merge the 2 lists together and want to include the !product code in the email to reference the product they bought, which one of the products will actually show up in their email?

I hope that's clear :-)

I did a test...

Hi Dean,

I did a test to see which "Product #" would show up in the code : !product and it was the product they bought last, not first.

In other words if they bought product #0001 on 11/04/2006

and they bought product #0002 on 11/05/2006

When I merge the 2 lists:  "Product List 0001" and "Product List 0002"

Right now when I insert  "!product" int the email and merge the 2 lists they will receive the email and it will show the LATER product they bought: "0002" and not the first one "0001"

What I want to do is show the FIRST product they bought: product "0001" when the list is merged and I insert the global code "!product" in the email.

Is that possible without changing the global codes I've already setup which is the same for each list - "!product" ?

Many thanks,

-Dave

The Filter Duplicate Email Addresses option...

Dave,

Currently the process uses a simple "GROUP BY email" addition to the MySQL query.  I believe this can return random results.  I had thought about an option to set the "default list to use" but couldn't figure it out.  I will have to consider this further.
