bounced emails not deleting from system

hi dean

i am having big troubles trying to get the system to delete bounced emails
the list is now up to 25,000 addresses but approx half of these are being bounced but not removed from the system
(this is now causing a server crash sometimes)
could you please outline a step by step process on how to set this up correctly or outline where i may be going wrong as i have tried various things but am at a wits end

ps otherwise a great pice of software and extremely happy with it

as per my last email :

on second thoughts to make this process easier i have decided to split the list into 4 groups of 5000 addresses and then email each list separately to ask them to sign up again , this way i can delete the original list and start again with people who opt in

Is bounce.cgi configured on your installation?  To initially clean your list you might want to set the program to "Remove users if they bounce 1 times in X days".

The easiest way with a list of your size would be to export the entire list to a file, break it up with a text program, then re-import your files into new ListMail lists.

With larger lists it would be more convenient to use a custom script.

thanks dean , i tried the delete bounced emails '' 1 times in x days'' , -it then proceeds to ''1 time in 999 days''
is this how its supposed to read?
anyway to cut a long story short , bounced emails are still not deleting and yes i have configured cgi

When you use the "Test Mail Settings" button or send an email to the bounce address with "TESTBOUNCE" in the subject line, do you receive a "ListMail: bounce.cgi success!" message at your Administrator Email address?  If so, then bounce.cgi should be working.

You should be able to set the option to bounce "X times in X days" to anything you want.  I don't know why it would default to "999" 0 or did you set it to this?

I would use "1 times in 1 days" but it doesn't matter how many "days" you set it to when you are removing after just 1 bounce.

thanks dean, done all that and yes am receiving the test email bounce

if im ticking the ''bounce cgi box'' do i also need to complete the host details and login id details in the ''bounced message handling section''?

No, those settings are for bounce by mailbox.  If the test works it should be processing as expected.. Hmm  :?
