Bouncing addresses not being removed
« on: March 21, 2007, 11:55:50 am »
Hi,

I had have my configuration set so that users who bounce more than 3 times in 30 days are automatically removed from the database.

However, I have noticed that despite receiving several hundred bounces with every mailing, these users are still in my database a couple of months on.

My host doesn't like this as they think im spamming, and so I tried changing the settings so that users are deleted if they bounce once in 1 day.

But this hasn't made a difference, and the boucing addresses aren't being removed.

On a seperate note...

I've tried setting up the bounce.cgi but can't seem to configure this as it appears my outgoing host (wanadoo) doesn't use Sendmail or Qmail. The properties when I send an email to myself just say localhost rather than anything else.

Any ideas about these issues?

Richard

Hi Richard,

It sounds like the bounce feature is not configured.  You will either need to set up a mailbox and enable it in ListMail (and make sure Dailymail runs properly each day) or set up bounce.cgi.  Without either of these configured bounce processing will not work despite the settings on the Configuration page.

Your web host -should- allow email to be sent through their SMTP server.  It is highly unlikely that your ISP will allow commercial email and if they have so far I would consider you lucky!  :)  bounce.cgi must be configured on the server that receives email sent to your domain.  The mail service often runs parallel to your web site on the same computer/server, which is optimal.  Your host may need to assist with setting up the aliases as required.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

My ISP does not allow email to be sent via third party servers, and so I can't link up my email account to send mail through my web host.

This is what is stopping me from setting up the bounce.cgi

Would I have to change webhosts to make this effective or is there another way around it?

If your web host can offer SMTP services on a port other than 25 you can likely send email through your web host using Outlook.

Actually, bounce.cgi runs on your web host.  Your host will receive email to bounce@example.com (example.com being your ListMail domain) and, if they support it, the email can then be forwarded to bounce.cgi which is uploaded to the server.

Please ask your host about the possibility of forwarding email to your domain to a CGI script.

I managed to get use my email server rather than my web host for outgoing mail using a different port as you said.

I then spoke to one of their support staff about the type of email that it uses (qmail or sendmail)

Apparently it uses something called Exim instead. However, they said using sendmail should be fine, although procmail is not supported.

The support person thought this would still work, but since testing it by sending "TESTBOUCE" from another email address, I don't get an automated reply.

When I  click "Test mail settings" from my configuration page, I do receive an email to my bounce account, but this doesnt mean the cgi. is working properly does it?

Also....will this cgi run with Exim?

Rather than use the cgi I've decided to give the "email account with bounced messages checked by dailymail" a go.

I've got the cron job set up which seems to be working fine, and everything is linked to an email address specifically for collecting bounced emails.

However, when I manually run dailymail it doesn't seem to recognise that there are over 1000 bounced addresses in the email account it is linked to.

I get the following...

Connecting to bounced message server... Connected!
Verifying username and password... Verified!
No bounced messages.

Any idea why this may be?

This should definitely -not- be...  Are you sure you are using the correct login details on the Configuration page? I can check into this further with the appropriate access.

Hi Richard,

I added your account to MailWasher so I could view the messages in it.  I saw 3.  I then updated the Admin email to my test address and ran dailymail, skipping everything except Bounce via mailbox.

I got this:
Quote
Connecting to bounced message server... Connected!
Verifying username and password... Verified!
Processing bounced messages, please wait... Done!
3 bounced messages processed.

Are you sure this is not working as expected?
