Custom Message Codes not working
« on: April 09, 2005, 09:05:32 am »
I tried to add the following custom message code to the Global Codes:
!copyright

So that when I put !copright in my emails it would add my copyright text:
Copyright 2005 Joni Solis - A Love for Horses
All Rights Reserved.

But when I send myself a ListMail Preview of the email to text all I get in the email is: !copyright and not:
Copyright 2005 Joni Solis - A Love for Horses
All Rights Reserved.

What could I be doing wrong? Or is their a bug?

Hi,
That could be a bit confusing…
When you use preview to send a test it doesn’t replace the codes.
I suppose this is because most are substituted from the database of your list and without the list there is nothing to put in most fields.
It might be possible for some dummy record to be put in somewhere for the preview in a later version, who knows?
I just entered exactly what you said in mine and it works perfectly (wouldn’t it just..).
(just enter copyright and let ListMail put the ! in or you might get !!.)
You could reassure yourself by adding a new list for testing which is what I have.
Add yourself as the only member from where you are, and send to that list (of one, you).
Then you could be sure that it actually does it. But it does work fine.

Just a little update… If you do enter !copyright when defining your code and you end up with the code !!copyright, you could have a problem. If you then don’t notice and enter !copyright in your text it is not an actual code (which is !!copyright) and so it will put !copyright in the preview (as that is what the text is), and also the mail as it is not the correct code.

Joni,

The preview email does replace some codes, but not all (yet).  Custom text codes are currently not replaced.  I'll make a note to improve the process further.

Thanks for your excellent response, Trevor!

Dear Dean and Trevor,

Thanks for the help. I will now make a test list just to test my emails before adding them to my real list. That is a very good idea. Thanks!

As a suggestion for test lists, instead of sending only one e-mail, I'd suggested sending a few.

I send it to my various e-mail accounts and ensure that they are on a different mail server. Send to my hotmail, gmail, yahoo and other domain accounts too.

Make one of them "text only" during the sign-up process. That way when you send the e-mail you'll be able to see an HTML and text view of it for review purposes.

If you can add an AOL account I'd do that too just to check to see how it looks. Then again, I've almost given up on e-mail I send to a AOL members.

Steve,

You might do better getting through to AOL with a multiple-ip sending patch, as noted in this post.  Of course, if AOL is blocking the URLs you send in your messages this might not help.  You can give their postmaster hotline a call and they will check if your IP is blocked.  You can also apply to have your server whitelisted.  Check out http://postmaster.aol.com

Actually - I've almost given up. But since I moved to a VPS with my own mailserver, I'm hoping those issues will no longer be a problem.
