Import problems
« on: March 13, 2006, 01:39:44 am »
Hi there,

I imported a list of around 60 email addresses with first and last names in a .CSV file.  I've done this before with no problems.  This time, however, the lastnames were imported as first names and the lastname field was left blank!  I've manaully corrected the entries (bit of a pain!) but would like to know what went wrong.  I'm very sure that I correctly mapped the fields during the import.  Here's a sample of the .CSV file (with email addresses changed)...

"First Name","Last Name","Email","Email Opt Out","Phone","Account Name"
"Sean","Rees","valleyboy35@?????.com","0","","Prospects"
"Jose","Pereira","josepereira570@?????l.com","0","","Prospects"
"Barry","Merga","bmerga@?????.com","0","","Prospects"
"Curtis","Cronin","curtz57@?????.com","0","","Prospects"
"David","Blankley","dblankley@?????.com","0","","Prospects"

Any thoughts?

Regards,

James Brinkworth

Hi James,

I would check the "first" imported users information, since this is what you are using as the "import map" for your import.

Another words, make sure that on the first user that you are importing, that all of the individuals information is correct and is in the right place. It could be as easy as having the first and last name backwards on the "first" user...You could be assigning the "first name" to the "last name" based on one persons backwards info.

The blank field could be a result of the same problem...

This is just an idea...hopefully it helps :D

James,

The CSV files looks good.  If you can recreate the problem, such as with a test list and smaller test CSV file, please let me know so I can investigate.

Hi Don,

I ran a couple of tests as you suggested.  The first test was with a small CSV with 5 email addresses in it but also with some extraneous data at the end of the file that was put in by our CRM program that generated the csv file.  This causes the problem as reported.  Here's the file:

"First Name","Last Name","Email","Email Opt Out","Phone","Account Name"
"Sean","Rees","valleyboy35@?????.com","0","","Prospects"
"Jose","Pereira","josepereira570@?????.com","0","","Prospects"
"Barry","Merga","bmerga@?????.com","0","","Prospects"
"Curtis","Cronin","curtz57@?????.com","0","","Prospects"
"Michael","Davey","turkeymd@?????.com","0","","Prospects"
"Email list"

"Confidential Information - Do Not Distribute"
"Generated By:  James Brinkworth  13/03/2006 09:02"
"Guardian Locksmith Training Ltd."

I then ran a 2nd test after removing the junk at the end of the file and the import ran ok!  A case of making sure the data is ALL good before hitting the import button, I guess!    It would have been nice if LMP could have just ignored the bad data - what do you think?

Many thanks,

James

James,

I am glad my suggestion pointed you in the right direction and you resolved your problem.  Dean seems to listen to all suggestions so let's see how he responds.

Every problem I have ever had has either been fixed by my own troubleshooting or by posting here in this forum and Dean usually comes to the rescue, unless some other nice person in this group beats him to the punch :D ...
