testing config sendmail
« on: February 15, 2007, 09:59:33 pm »
Hi Dean,

I am trying to test the initial configuration. I get the following when I click "Test Mail Settings":

=========

Testing mail servers..

[Bounce Handling]
Is enabled?  No (you should probably configure it)

[SMTP Server]
Is enabled?  Yes
Connecting to SMTP server.. Connected!
Sending test email to remote address.. Problem setting receiver to Remote Test Address
The SMTP server is not configured correctly. Check your settings.

==============

Please tell me what it means that it can't set receiver to remote address. The remote address I entered is my normal main email address. Is it supposed to be something special I don't know about?

I don't have any idea how to "configure an SMTP server. What should I do to get it to work? I followed the exact directions from the help file. Nothing  else. It says:
"Initially, set ListMail to use SMTP with the host "localhost", no authorization, and no email checking." That is what I did.

Thanks,
Lloyd

Hi Lloyd,

One potential problem is that the "Bounce to Email" or (bounce disabled) "Administrator Email" is not on the ListMail domain.  The bounce email commonly has the most restrictions and can cause problems with sending.  Usually if it is an address on your ListMail domain you will be ok.

You may want to test your SMTP settings with test messages to a test list instead of using "Test Mail Settings".  With this method you can enable the "SMTP log" which can tell us more about the problem.

Your host could have further limitations that the "Send From Email" for each list must exist in your control panel as a mailbox or forwarder/alias.

If your server won't work without authorization you will have to try it with.  You can use any standard email account to authorize with the server.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance!
