What to enter as "database"?
« on: August 30, 2006, 09:13:43 am »
Hi,

I am new to this and Mysql.  Just downloaded listmail but when I tried to edit config.php.txt, I get lost at what to enter as "database".

I had created a database at my host account at godaddy with a username and a password but I didn't see anywhere that let me give the database a name.

Can anybody help?

Thanks,
Jane

Hi Jane,

I've done a number of installations on GoDaddy.  The biggest/only drawback to their service is the fact that you can only send 250 emails per day, per account, which is not at all optimal for ListMail.  If your lists are larger than 250 (They probably are) you will likely want to find alternate hosting (I can suggest a few options).  You may also, of course, want to attempt an install on GoDaddy, for the experience, before jumping hosts which is a small challenge in itself.

The values you need are the MySQL server hostname, a database name and a username and password.  If you cannot specify the database name yourself from within your hosting control panel it should be shown somewhere in the databases section.  You might also need a custom hostname, which should be shown if so.

If you continue to have troubles I recommend browsing the available documentation on databases in the GoDaddy knowledgebase, contacting GoDaddy support or purchasing paid ListMail support where I login directly.

Hi Dean,

Thanks for your reply and tips.

I have a couple small lists that I guess I could use my existing Godaddy account.  I will try to install it any way.

But yes, my biggest list is larger than 250, quite a bit (500 times actully) larger so it would be great if you could offer advice for a list like that  (for a newsletter and such).  I guess I could separate my list to up to 5 portions to be send at different days but anything allowing less than 25K a day might be inconvenient for me.

I was offered a trial hosting at thirdspherehosting.com, which is quite expensive for hosting (lots of extras though).  How do you think about that for a 125K list?  I haven't found out how many emails they allow to send each day (do you know?)  If it's not good enough for such a list I won't even bother to try.

Thanks,
Jane
