I normally recommend DreamHost conservatively, for lists up to 5000 or so.  While they have default limts on email of 1000-2000 per day you should be able to write to support and ask them to raise your limit.  It would be wise to include proof or explanation that you are running a 100% opt-in list.

Don't buy hosting from Godaddy and use it with Listmail.  They limit you to 3000 emails per day, even if you buy a dedicated server from them.

Of course, if you call them up before buying a server, they tell you what you want to hear, only to change things after they've hooked you as a customer.

I like 1&1 Root Servers for $99/mo.  I set these up with lots of extras (domains, listmail, server backups, firewall, optimization, etc) for $250 and manage it ongoing (security, mail issues, etc) for $40/mo.  If all goes well you should be able to send upwards of 750k emails per day.

If you're going to send out that many emails, you probably want some rotational IP software, so that you don't get blocked everywhere.

This can costs upwards of $2000, but it is well worth it.

Plus you'll want to buy a bunch of IP's from your host so that you can rotate between them.

Mine runs on Postfix, and it works well with LMP, although it does add a lot of overhead with the rotating.

I could probably send out about 800k per day, with my Dual AMD Opteron with two gigs ram.  With the rotating IP overhead.

I used to get an IP rotation patch from www.simscripts.com for $50 but the guy jacked his price up to $250.  I'm still working on my own patch for qmail/Plesk so I can offer it to my hosting clients on my next server (too:)).

There's a post on IP rotation here:

I think we could get hundreds of thousands more emails per day if we split the queue folders up further... :)

That would be awesome if you could figure out how to speed it up.

That same guy sold me the postfix for around $2k but he gave me the source code and I can use it on unlimited servers, without having to give him access to it.

Seemed pricey for about 30 lines of code, but then again I didn't have the time to go mucking through Postfix source code on a production server either.
