HostGator mailing policy & limits
« on: November 14, 2006, 09:22:24 pm »
I have been using ListMail on HostGator (specializes in reseller hosting) for a few months with lists as large as 1,900 with basically no problems until yesterday my site was temporarily suspended for exceeding HG's mailing policy/limits Would you look at HG's policy ( http://www.hostgator.com/mailpolicy.shtml ) and tell me whether LM can operate in compliance using lists under 3,000? Am I going to have to leave HG? :(

Take a look at this one of theirs:

Code: [Select]
Any mailing list over 900 emails is only allowed to be sent to during off-peak times to prevent high server loads. Off peak times qualify as all day Saturday and Sunday, and 1am - 8 am eastern time M-F.

So unless you are mailing during those times you are breaking their policy.

Besides that, it looks like if you throttle the mailing you should be somewhat ok.

You also say "Lists", which to me means more than one...  If your total lists exceed 5,000, it appears you violate their rule.

I'd personally suggest finding another host.

Thank you for replying. The time of day restriction I can live with. I'm not sure I grasp how to execute the throttling. To go 1 email every 6 seconds using Internal PHP mail, what would the settings be here ...

Internal PHP mail [??? ] ms per email and [??? ] minutes every [??? ]  emails

Would that be 600 or 6000 ms? And do the other variables represent a period of delay after a certain number or a total time for a certain number?

It would be 6000 ms for 6 seconds between messages.

The second option is for an additional delay every X emails.
