Installation purchase - problem with bounce cgi
« on: March 10, 2008, 08:38:03 pm »
Hi Dean,
You were kind enough to do my ListMailPro installation mid February. I sent out my first newsletter last week. It doesn't appear that the email forwarder/cgi script for the bounces is working correctly.
The database only shows 54 "Bounced" records, however I have over 13,500 emails in the bounce@mydomain.com account. Approximately, half of these records are Yahoo accounts that give the message like
"Warning: message 1JYF8K-0000Nv-5x delayed 24 hours."
It appeared to me that when an email bounced, it got back in the EXIM mail queue...but I can't say for sure because it appeared to be stuck at 10,000+ names. I had to restart the queue. I eventually clobbered the queue when 29 messages appeared to still be in a loop.   Would you mind checking the installation settings for me to see why it didn't work?
Thanks!

Greetings,

I normally don't close support tickets until over a month later, however I might have gotten hasty (or optimistic) with your case. :)  My policy is, of course, to see to it that your initial mailings go out smoothly and your installation works as expected.

I am re-opening your ticket and will respond in more detail there.

Dean-
Could you check the ticket one more time? I updated it with more recent information. I ran my 2nd newsletter yesterday.
Thanks!

bounce config

Hi Dean,
I hope I haven't exasperated you...but I still have some confusion over the bounce configuration setting. Should I NOT use an existing email address in the config settings if bounce.cgi is being used?

Under "Bounced Message Handling," the checkbox "use bounce.cgi" is checked and you configured this during installation.

There are a couple more checkboxes in this section that are NOT checked. On the very bottom of this section is a place for an email address and count boxes for "delete users if they bounce."  It is in this section that I entered a valid email address yesterday with a count of delete users if they bounce 2 times in 30 days.

Should this "Bounce" email address be blank in order for bounce.cgi to work?

I've added to the ticket with more detail information.

Thanks!

I usually configure the "Bounce to Email" as bounce@example.com and it must remain this way for bounce.cgi to work.  Also, you should avoid creating an actual mailbox in your control panel named bounce@example.com as it can interfere with the CGI forwarder.
