Mail Sending Failure Error
« on: June 16, 2008, 03:21:09 pm »
Hi  - I am attempting to send to one of my lists and I get the following error message : "Sending Error . check your mail settings. Server said. Go to config"

When I go to config and test my settings everthing works OK on the test message?

Any suggestions?

Hi Peter,

Did you try this?

If you are using SMTP, try enabling the SMTP log and viewing to see if there are any errors reported by the server.

I have enabled the smtp logfile, where do I view this?

I have also inserted the "$smtp_timeout=45;" line into the config.php file.

I was experiencing this error following an attempt to import 400 names into one of my lists, I gave up in the end and am now manually inserting them. I am yet to test the system by sending to my list I will let you know how I get on.

23 June 2008 Update - Still have sending error problem
« Reply #3 on: June 23, 2008, 02:22:32 pm »
I have manually added 29 names to a new list, when I attempt to send I have the same error message - "Sending error - Check Your mail settings - Server said - Go to config"

I am running the latest version of ListMail

I have tested my smtp and it is working fine.

I have also inserted the "$smtp_timeout=45;" line into the config.php file.

I have smtp logging enabled - but do not know where to find this to interrogate the log??

Would appreciate some assistance.

24th June 08 - Update - beginning to make some progress - having read other threads on this forum I appear to be experiencing similar problems to other users insofar as I have to manually intervene on the "resume" button to keep the send process working.

I can now also see how listmail generates an SMTP log which I will copy when I next send to the list, which may assist in finding out what is actually happening.

Am still looking for assistance on this but hopefully when fixed it may benefit other users if they have similar issues.

Hi Peter,

When a timeout is the problem ListMail will not normally show an error, it will simply stop 'loading' new data.

The very bottom of the SMTP log could offer more information, such as an error message "too many messages this connection" which might indicate a per-connection limit we can work around from the Config page.  Another one, "administrative prohibition" might indicate you have reached a web host-imposed hourly or daily limit on email.

If all of this doesn't help I would be willing to investigate by sending to a test list of all my own addresses.  You can submit your info and a link back to this post here

I have submitted my information via the link you provided.

In regard to timeouts and sending too many e-mails - my current list is only 33 recipients in size so I do not consider this to be an issue.

I am due to send a messgae to this list on 26th June - I will capture the data from it and send it to you.

Appreciate the assistance.

Update - 26th June 08 - sent mailing to list of 34 recipients, mailing intially failed, clicked on resume button, listmail sent 25 messages and stopped, waited 60 seconds and clicked on resume, sent remaining 9 messages. Have captured smtp log for last 9 messages sent. Interrogation of this log indicates no error messages? can send this log to you if you require it.

Hi Peter,

Your very last SMTP log shows this at the bottom, which looks good:
Quote
> QUIT
221 smtp.example.com

The second last SMTP log, however, has this:
Quote
> MAIL FROM: <bounce@example.com>
> RCPT TO: <theuser@example.com>
421 resources temporarily unavailable.  Please try again later.

Examining the log more closely, the error seems to happen when trying to send the 26th message.  Therefore, the first thing I would try is setting "Reconnect every X emails" to "25" on the ListMail Configuration page.

Please let me know whether or not this solves the issue.

Hi - I have reset the "reconnect every xx email" to 25, I am scheduling a mailing to the list on 28th June 08 (GMT), I will let you know how I get on.

One question - where does listmail store SMTP Logs??

The logs are written to the ListMail /attach folder as text files, ie. LM_SMTP_*.txt.  It's a good idea to remove old logs so the folder does not fill up.
