Duplicates NOT removed from mailings?
« on: July 25, 2005, 09:28:33 am »
Hello,

Still using 1.7b, but have for over 1 year now... the problem, I have people on several different lists, (3 or more).

I thought DUPLICATES were supposed to be removed automatically when I do a mailing?   People are complaining of receiving SEVERAL Emails, all the same, as they are not being removed... is this because I do the mailings separately - one list at a time?

Will moving to the new version 1.8 solve this problem - but ONLY if I GROUP all the lists together and do the mailing?  If that is the only option, is there ANY way to have the MAILER look for duplicates in my lists - when doing a mailing and have those REMOVED when I Send Email each time?

Thanks in advance...
Thanks,
-Brett

Brett,

Yes, I believe you are experiencing the problem because you are emailing one list at a time.  ListMail is only able to eliminate duplicates in mailings to "All Lists".  Precautions are taken against the same email address being on the same list twice, so it shouldn't be necessary otherwise.

The new version, with the User Selection feature, allows you to send to groups of lists - that is, not necessarily ALL or ONE list.  It also has an option to filter out duplicates in case you're emailing multiple lists.

You should not have duplicate email addresses on each list, but it can happen if you are using a custom script to insert users.  A custom script to filter out duplicates would be needed to fix this.

Hi DW,

Regarding this:

It also has an option to filter out duplicates in case you're emailing multiple lists.

I see it in the User Selection Area, question on how it works: does that mean - I believe #1 is correct - unfortunately a better option would be a GLOBAL option (#2 below) to Filter Duplicate Emails... this would be in the main Configuration screen.

1.) if I want to EVENTUALLY send to ALL email addresses in ALL of my lists I would have to select ALL the lists to send to, and then click this Option on, and then start sending?  If so, that could take hours and hours!

or (better),

2.) can I turn this option on and it will automatically do the DUPLICATE check each time I do a mailing to one list (to make sure that the address is NOT duplicated in ANY other list)?

Also, please tell me when the filtering takes place, is that when the selection is copied to lm_sendq?   Or, does it happen when the mail is sent out (in real time) from lm_sendq?

and this:

Does this mean using your own LMINSERT script will ALLOW duplicates?  I thought it had an option to ignore, or reset the delay back to zero if the email address was already found?
Thanks,
-Brett

User Selection will allow you to select "All Lists" with a single rule.  You can also set up a selection for multiple lists or sub-lists.  You can save User Selections, which includes all of the rules and the dupe option.  Once saved, you can email your selection as many times as you like, just as easily as you would now email a single list!

Filtering takes place by simply adding a "GROUP BY email" to the SQL query.  Check it out at http://listmailpro.com/demo

Yes, my LMINSERT script does have the features you mention that determine what to do with duplicates.  Dupes can happen, however, when using custom scripts that don't perform checking for dupes.
