no bounces, no replies, no clikc thrus
« on: October 17, 2007, 06:02:13 am »
After checking with my host and testing my configurations which proved to be OK, on Monday, Oct 15 at about 9PM EDT I sent out a mailing of 917 to a new opt-in list for a client. As this was a new list, I expected many bounces for addresses that the client had not yet tested. However, after two days there were no bounces, no replies and no click thrus to links set up in the email for tracking. I have the SMTP report, which looks good.  Why such lack of response from this mailing?

If all the messages were accepted by the host there may be a problem with final delivery.  There might be a bottleneck or other problem such as serious or temporary blocks (although NO response at all is quite strange, so a bottleneck is a better possibility).  You could ask your host to trace final delivery of messages to a particular email address, such as one you use for testing.  They should be able to scan the logs to see what happened.  With more advanced log analysis tools (www.sawmill.net) they could tell you exact success/failure rates for email sent from your ListMail "Bounce to Email".

Response from my hosting company

DW,

Here are the finding of my hosting service, especially:
"You might want to consult the developer of the mailing list software for a
work around to the "10 messages in one connection" problem. It would be best f the mailing list software created a connection(single) to the mail server for each message it was attempting to deliver."

Is there something you or I can do at the MailList Pro end?

This was their full response.

"Thank you. The messages were queued by our mail server after causing the
error "no immediate delivery: more than 10 messages received in one
connection". It sounds like your mailing list software connected to our mail
server and attempted to send out all of the messages at one time. The mail
server has a built in feature to prevent it from being overloaded, that will
queue messages if 10 or more are received from a single connection. I've a
sent a command to the mail server to deliver the queued messages. It may
take a while, but by the end of today our mail server should attempt to
deliver each of the newsletters you sent out.

You might want to consult the developer of the mailing list software for a
work around to the "10 messages in one connection" problem. It would be best f the mailing list software created a connection(single) to the mail server for each message it was attempting to deliver."

Hi Paul,

It sounds like your host may be using Exim, for which there are a few optimizations available.

ListMail can reconnect to your SMTP server at any interval you like.  On the Configuration page set your "Reconnect every X emails" option to 10.
