Personal address problem
« on: May 15, 2004, 09:01:11 pm »
Hello Everyone,

I am thoroughly enjoying my new ListMail Pro. I just finished installing it and everything works fine with one minor exception. I have tested and retested but I can't seem to fix it. Here is the problem: I can get every email address to work on my forms with the exception of my personal addresses. I can test a yahoo, hotmail or any other address and I get a confirmation and welcome but not when I put in my personal addresses...the ones to my site freeusacall.com and my charter.net ones. I can't even manually put them in. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix this problem.

Tks in advance for any assistance.

This is very strange behaviour.  What happens when you try to email the accounts you are trying to add from a standard email program, like Outlook?  Do the messages get through?

Hi Dean,

Thanks for your quick response. No...I don't have a problem sending  a request with my Outlook program. I can send signup@freeusacall.com and everything will work fine as long as I don't use my personal emails. If I use Yahoo or Hotmail the welcome and confirm message will come through ok. Also, I have not received any followup messages my to my 135 subscribers. It states that they are in queue for number 2 but I havenot seen anything on my yahoo site. Kind of puzzling.

Perhaps your personal emails are already subscribed to the list that the signup@freeusacall.com address is set to sign users up to.  If they are already on the list, the additional subscribe request(s) will simply be ignored.

Followups are sent by the dailymail process which should have a cron task set up for it.

Try enabling "notify admin when dailymail runs" on the Config page and see if you receive the report.  If not, then your cron task is not running correctly.

Hi Dean,

None of the personal addresses are in the database. I check that out everytime I send a test signup. Also, the cron is set properly because I get a report at night on the subscribers. I just haven't received any followup messages yet. I have them set at 0 which would be every 24 hours. I will wait to see what happens tonight.

I recommend trying a test to make sure that ListMail can send to your addresses.  Set up a test list and put some of your addresses on it (Hotmail, Personal, etc).

Next, modify admin.php to output additional SMTP debug information.  Search for the following:

Code: [Select]
// debug, shows SMTP messages
// $bugs = '1';

And change it to read as follows, uncommenting the $bugs variable:

Code: [Select]
// debug, shows SMTP messages
$bugs = '1';

Then, try a test email to your test list and see if there are any messages that indicate ListMail might be incorrectly sending email to your SMTP server.

The only thing is, even with SMTP enabled welcome and confirmation messages are still sent with Internal PHP mail().  This is done to prevent too many connections to the SMTP server in case of many signups.  SMTP is, however, much faster and more reliable for larger list email.

Even though welcome and confirmation messages are sent with internal mail there could be a response in the SMTP debug messages that tell us why your messages are not being delivered to your personal addresses.

Hi Dean,

Good news! All of the follow ups went out fine and the bad addresses were delivered to me with the report. I have not set up the test code yet but everything seems to be functioning fine with the exception of my personal addresses. That is really not a big problem because I was just using that as a test. Using my yahoo addresses work just fine in testing out the system. Tks a lot for all your help. Also, I'm glad I was able to get you a referral today. I plan on making you more money in the very near future.

P.S. One more minor question. I noticed on my web site that when I use the form to test the sign up process and get the thank you page, when I click back to my home page the name and email is still there. Is there a code I can ad to my page that will remove the info when I return. I don't think that is normal. Have you got any idea how I could eliminate that minor problem? Tks in advance for you help.

I'm still a little concerned as to why you didn't receive the messages.  Maybe you have a spam filter?  :?

As for showing the content of forms when you hit "Back" to go to a page, you might have success turning off any possible "caching" features of your page with a META tag.

Dean,
I am unable to send to my yahoo address.
I have tried several times.

Going from Outlook is no problem.

Do I have the same problem

Also, does anyone know about what other addresses
might be at issue.

Thanks,

Brad

I think you might have the same problem i have with my personal emails. See the post  "bug".

If you used your personal email to test and then you unsubscribed and then again you subscribe it, for some strange reason you will not receive any emails.

How do you set subscribers to recycle on followups?
« Reply #10 on: May 25, 2004, 01:43:26 pm »
Hi Dean,

I just had a nightmare of a problem occur with my follow up messages. I put in a new series of 11 messages and was expecting the cycle to restart on number 1. Some subscribers were already were in cycles. With a database of 8,000 I monitored the initial run to make sure all was going well. To my dismay the first 1,500 subscribers were getting all 11 at once with no delay. Fortunately, I was monitoring it and stoped the cycle and cleared everything up. Now I have a customer base set on 12th followup and don't know how to get them to start on number one. I am sending out manually for the time being. Any suggestions? The instructions on followups needs to be clarified a lot. Tks.

It's possible that your server incorporates Apache "KeepAlive".

What this does is it will automatically "Refresh" the page after a certain amount of time.  This can cause problems with dailymail and mail sends resulting in followups being sent erratically, skipped, etc.

Your host should have the following set in their httpd.conf file:

KeepAlive Off

At this time the only way to reset all of your users to the first followup is with a custom command in PhpMyAdmin, ie:

update lm_users set cseq = '1' where list = '1'

If you don't know how to use PhpMyAdmin you could use a hidden page in ListMail.

First, login.  Then, browse to the following URL:

http://yoursite.com/mail/editconf.php?customcmd=1

Enter the custom command above, substituting your list and desired followup #, in the box provided.
