While rare the "Test Mail Settings" test has been known to show this error while still allowing sending of standard email, ie. by using "Send Email" to send to a test list.
The problem is usually related to the "bounce to address". With bounce disabled this is the administrator email. For best results this address should be on on the ListMail domain, so if ListMail is installed at example.com/mail the address might be bounce@example.com. Your "Send From Email" addresses for each list may also need to be on your domain, and may furthermore need to exist in your hosting control panel as a "mailbox" or "forwarder" in order to be able to send.
Another possible cause of problems are the SMTP settings. First, try "localhost" as the host with no additional authorization. If that doesn't work try creating a mailbox and using that to authorize with the server (AUTH authorization, maknig sure to use the correct 'hostname'). Lastly, try the "Authorize by Checking Email" feature with and without AUTH enabled.

Thanks Dean!
I took your advice by sending a test email. And you were right about the SMTP settings. When I sent the test email, I got an error and received this:
"You may want to check your settings, enable the SMTP log and send some test messages to make sure they are delivered"
When you wrote, "try "localhost" as the host with no additional authorization" did you mean without a username and password?
I'm not clear on what you mean by this:
If that doesn't work try creating a mailbox and using that to authorize with the server (AUTH authorization, maknig sure to use the correct 'hostname'). Lastly, try the "Authorize by Checking Email" feature with and without AUTH enabled.
I have two email addresses that I've been using, and they are supported by SMTP. The reason I said it that way is because I have to use my ISP's SMTP in Outlook Express, but to use my cPanel to setup an email address it does set it up with the domain's SMTP.
It's almost 2 A.M. and my thinking is fading fast, so it you can explain what you mean about "AUTH" it will help me more.
Thanks,
Neil
