Problem setting receiver to Remote Test Address
« on: April 09, 2008, 05:50:04 pm »
I've had ListMailPro for a long time (love it) - but I recently moved servers and after getting everything setup properly, upon testing email settings (on the config page), I get this error:

"Problem setting receiver to Remote Test Address"

I'm able to connect to the SMTP server, login verifies, but then the error.  I haven't found this error message anywhere else in the forum, so I'm hoping that someone has a clue about this...

Thanks!

Just a note - I've verified that my server has wget... I thought that may be why it can't change the receiver address.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated!

This error can come up due to authentication issues and even a bug in the test feature on some servers.

I recommend enabling the SMTP log and doing a test mailing to a test list.  If there are errors the log should give us more information.  There may not be errors... It is rare and has been a long time but I have seen servers that gave an error when running the test but not when actually sending.

One of the most important settings is the bounce Return-path, which is the "Bounce to email".  It is usually necessary that this email be one on your ListMail domain.  With bounce disabled the Administrator Email is used, which should then be on the ListMail domain.

Some servers require that all email addresses used for sending, which means the "Bounce to email" and the "Send From Email" exist in your control panel as a mailbox or forwarder.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance!

Dean -

Thanks for the help. I totally forgot about the SMTP logging.

It was an issue where the bounce email address was filled in (even though I'm using bounce.cgi - and the SMTP server was trying to authenticate the bounce email address at send time - which was failing.

All is good now after I removed the bounce email address!

Thanks,
Elliott
