SMPT server unable to connect to localhost
« on: September 24, 2004, 03:21:40 pm »
Hi Dean,

Problems again with Listmail that started a few days ago.

When clicking on Resume Mailing this message comes up:

Connecting to SMTP server...
Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to localhost:25 in /home/oneworld/public_html/listmail/admin.php on line 798
Server not found!
Failed.

When doing a Test Mail Settings I get this response:

[SMTP Server]
Is enabled?  Yes
Connecting to SMTP server..
Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to localhost:25 in /home/oneworld/public_html/listmail/editconf.php on line 1260
Could not find server!

The SMTP server is not configured correctly. Check your settings

Whats up??

Regards
Bryan Thorby

I have been fighting this exact same error message for a year now. The exact same script works fine on most of my servers, but on 2 of them it gives me this error message you mentioned above.

Mine is

connecting to bounced message server...
warning: fscockopen():  unable to connect to sellwebsites.net:110 in
/home/sellwebs/wwwroot/sellwebsites.net/mail2/dailymail.php on line 135

Now, I can connect to the mail just fine with my pegasus and webmail.

You will find if you restart your server it will fix the problem, but only temporarily.

When I restart the server it will work fine for an hour or 2 but then it start giving the error message again.

After hours of investigating it the only solution I have had is to move it to a server that does not give me the error. It would be great, however, to find out how to fix it.

By the way, Dean, I would be GLAD to pay you to look into this. It has already cost me hundreds of dollars from my own techs trying to figure it out.

The latest version 77b seems to have fixed this problem.  I still get the error message when I start to send the email, but when I click on the "click here" button to continue, it then continues the rest of the mailing without a problem, no need to restart the server.

I will let you know after completing this mailing how well it works.

Well it worked for a while.  HOwever, after several mailings the error would not fix itself and I had to restart the server.

Connecting to SMTP server...
Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to sellwebsites.net:25
in /home/sellwebs/wwwroot/sellwebsites.net/mail2/admin.php on line 765
could not open socket with fsockopen()

again, Dean, I would be happy to pay for your time to find the solution to this.

Hello!

I am now installing listmail.  Installation was good, database setup went fine, but I keep getting the same error message even just when testing.

I get this:

Is enabled?  Yes
Checking mail.. Connected!
Verifying username and password... Verified!
Connecting to SMTP server..
Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to localhost:25 in /usr/local/4admin/apache/vhosts/christmasnotecards.com/httpdocs/mail/editconf.php on line 1261
Could not find server!

Any clues or suggestions???

It looks like this thread was started on 9/24.  This is 10/1 and I do not see a response from Dean to fix this problem.

Is this usual or unusual?

patty, we have to be patient, I am sure dean is quite busy. I am more than willing to pay dean for his time to solve this problem and have the solution shared with everyone in this post.

I will be patient.. at least for a little while.  I didn't realize he was a one-person tech support.  I know how crazy it can be wearing all the hats in your own business.

I will use an alternate program in the meantime, but will check back here during the week.

hmmm.. A major problem here

Patience is one thing, but I just read in the above "Announcement" posted by Dean on 9/13, that he will get to the boards basically "when he gets to it".

I am sorry, but I am running a business, too, and if I told my customers that, I wouldn't have very many left.

There are enough people getting server errors, that there is obviously a problem.  I cannot wait until he gets around to visiting the boards.

So, does anyone here know how to apply for a refund?

Hope you all had a great weekend.  Yes, I've been overwhelmed a little bit by paid support and various server conflicts.  Thanks for your patience, tim, it's much appreciated.  I don't feel the need to charge you with initial troubleshooting of this but if you want to order a Server Analysis I will do my best to quickly access your server, investigate, and determine the cause of this.

My initial thoughts are that this error could be caused by your host running a large number of users on a shared host and having limits on the number of SMTP connections that can be used at the same time.  This could also be caused by having "Reconnect every X emails" (on the ListMail Config page) set too low.  I recommend this be set to at least "1000".

I apologize, Patty, for your frustration.  Yes, lots of people have problems but they are usually server-specific and isolated as opposed to general failure. Serious issues are addressed immediately and released to my members.  I am visiting the forum and hope to visit more often to stay on top of things and provide better service.  I made the announcement at the top of the category to warn you about possible delays.  If you want guaranteed speed and results please purchase paid support as demand is steadily increasing.  I still feel ListMail is a great value considering there are no ongoing fees whatsoever (for current clients, this could change for future clients) and the initial cost is quite reasonable.  You don't find this often!

dean, I will try that setting and see if it makes a difference and report back. If that does not solve it I will purchase your support.

Yes, your mailer is a bargain, you charge us a 1 time fee. I think, dean, you should be offering a service package for $99 per year for those that want support, that would not be unreasonable at all.

If you remember, when I purchased your program, I sent you an extra $50 just for the heck of it because you had such a good set up.  My name is tim drobnick sr

I will report back.
