Very slow mailout
« on: February 02, 2006, 06:03:44 am »
I've a list of about 10,000 on a shared server.

The last mailout took between 2-3 hours to go out with a lost connection half way through.

The big problem though is that all though the mailing seems to have gone, delivery to the target addresses seems to be very, very slow.

I have a newsletter delivered to myself which I usually get on the day of posting, but it still hasn't arrived yet.

I know the mailing hasn't failed as I am getting a few bounces and a little bit of response, but nothing like what I would expect with a mailout this size.

Any thoughts?

Sue

Sue,

It sounds like you should talk to your web host about optimizing the email server software.  Lack of optimization can result in too many emails in the queue because they are not being sent fast enough.  This is a problem because of hard drive limitations - with thousands of files in a folder you will find that hard drive access becomes VERY limited.  Indeed, a server that is not optimized can slow to a crawl or even a halt from very large mail queues (or folders).  I once filled up a POP mailbox with several tens of thousands of messages and it took about 8 hours to "Check Email" and download them...

Your host may find the information in the following posts useful:

Qmail optimization (Plesk servers, etc):

Exim optimization (cPanel servers, etc):

It would also be a good idea to take a look at optimizing MySQL according on the server load and capabilities:

Hopefully your host is responsive and capable of helping with this issue.

Thanks for this Dean.  I contacted my host re the optimisation and he said if he did that it would leave everyone on the server open to spam attacks.

I have a shared server and he lifts a mail bar when I mail out.

I suspect that the very slow mailout I experienced last time was because he forgot to do this, although he hasn't admitted it!

My mailing this time is a 2 page text message that is stopping after 1,000 emails exactly.

I'm being advised to check my mail settings.  They seem O.K. to me.  Any ideas?

Yes, change hosts.

Hosts with limits like this are not recommended for listmail or any other mailing programs.
