Test Mail Settings Problem
« on: January 08, 2007, 03:29:56 pm »
I am reinstalling on new server and the install seemed to go ok.  While configuring the list when I test the mail settings I get the following report:

[Bounce Handling]
Is enabled?  No (you should probably configure it)

[SMTP Server]
Is enabled?  Yes
Connecting to SMTP server.. Connected!
Verifying username and password...Authenticating User/Pass... Verified!
Sending test email to remote address.. Problem setting receiver to Remote Test Address
The SMTP server is not configured correctly. Check your settings.

Not worried about the Bounce Handling at the moment. but I don't understand the bits in red.

Thanks

DW

You might run into this error if you have not configured bounce and your "Administrator Email" is not on the same domain as ListMail.  This is because the admin email is used in a very important email header, the "Return-path", used for bounces.  Some hosts have further restrictions where all emails being sent from must exist as an account or forwarder in your control panel.

Please let me know if you continue to have troubles.

Hi Dean thanks for that.  Once I got the bounce setup the test worked...as you said.  However I have another issue now that I have not seen before:  When I send an email the send screen throws up this error:

Server said:
354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself
550 Administrative prohibition

Does this mean that my new server is restricting this type of activity?

If so, what do I need to do/ask for,  to recify the situation.

Many thanks

John

Yes, this is likely.  I recommend asking your host if they have any hourly or daily limits on email.  I also recommend letting them know a little bit about how you acquire leads, etc. so they feel safe allowing you to send email - maybe they can raise your limits.

Another possibility is you are not using the correct SMTP hostname or authenticating properly with the server.  If you're not using it already, try enabling the AUTH setting with a username and password.

Yet another possibility, although it's unlikely, is that your server wants the "Send From Email" to be the same as the "Bounce to Email".  Even less likely is that the account used for AUTH must be used as the "Bounce to Email" and/or "Send From Email".

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance!
