550: Administrative Prohibition (Mail ONLY sends with PHP)..
« on: August 29, 2004, 11:14:26 pm »
Howdy. I've searched the forum for this, and though there were
several similar issues, none quite seemed to fit (or provide any
resolution). So...

I just upgraded, and turned on debug messages as instructed in
another post on this forum. Dean, this is the EXACT message I
was getting last time a few months back, when we were talking
with my host about something and it was finally fixed.

I keep getting success messages and the test pop-up window
says everything is configured alright, yet I keep getting sending
errors. The only thing that works is PHP send, which I've had to
use to send my ezine to nearly 9k subscribers the last two times.

The error message is below (with the e-mail address it contained
removed. Note, that address *was* an operative one that can
receive mail). I've tinkered with my SMTP settings for over an
hour, trying different combinations of things, and not one of them
has worked.

Thanks.

Harmony,

One of two things are likely happening:

1) You are not authenticated properly.  Try using the "Authorize by checking email" feature.

2) Your "Send from Email" address for your list does not work with your host.  This usually needs to be @yourdomain.com with yourdomain.com being your ListMail domain.  Some (few) hosts have a further restriction that you may only send "From" an address that exists as a mail account on the server.

Ahhh ... that was it exactly.

Thank you so much. I was three seconds short of rapping my
head against the wall, because I'd tried EVERYTHING in the
way of configuring settings. I didn't even think of the return
address.

Thanks!

I am getting a simuliar error-550
« Reply #3 on: September 10, 2004, 10:52:53 am »
I have tried the prescribed fix in this forum but to no avail.  Before I sat up my cron I received welcome mail but now I don't get any mail. My test mailings work but I receive no welcome mails but when I login into Listmail it says I have a mail in que. I hit the dailymail button and here is the message error I receive.

Hmm, I would suggest to you what I suggested to Harmony but you say it didn't help.  It is also important to have "Bounce to Address" or, if bounce is disabled, "Administrator Email" set to an account on the ListMail domain.

550 error
« Reply #5 on: September 14, 2004, 01:06:09 pm »
I used an email address configured on my server and that took care of the problem with the 550 error, but now I don't get a welcome email when I try to email a blank message to the email address.

I also don't get a welcome message automatically when I am directed to listmail from amember. I can see that the user was added from amember but I seem to be in a cron mail que.

When I email a blank mail to a list, it don't even show up on the user list. I go to the web-mail for the list address and the mail is received by the list email. What am I doing wrong?

The email address I tried to blank mail to is lucasconey@diningpleasuredollars.com

Thanks
Ed

It seems that your signup-by-email scripts are not set up and/or working.  The list "from" address generally cannot be used as a subscribe address.  A subscribe address is set up to send email to a signup CGI script, not an actual email box.

Check out this page from the help for details about setting these up:

Dean I am having the same problem. I did all the above and still get the 550 error. I went as far as deleting everything and started from scratch. I saved my subscribers so I can re add them. When I do a test mail I get a success. What could be the trouble. I have another one set up on another server and it works just fine.  Here is what I get

Sending error. Check your mail settings.

This error message might also indicate you have hit a limit for sending email from your host.  I recommend that you ask tech-support if there are limits and, if so, what they are.

It wont send the first one. This is a brand new list with only 12 people on it. It lets people sign up, sends welcome and confirm mail. Works and says success when testing mail settings. I dont understand if it does all of that why it wont send out a mailing. I also set up a new list and just put one of my emails in there are it wont send.. Same error message. One thing I did not do was turn on that debug as I could find no info on how to do it.

It could also be an authorization issue.  Try using the "Authorize by checking email" feature.  First, you'll need to set up an email account for ListMail to use.  Try using this method with and without the AUTH setting with same login info.
