At a loss here
« on: March 07, 2005, 11:43:58 am »
Hey,

Thinking I know more than I really do, I am having a heck of time getting the cron job scheduled. ;-)  I've contacted my host (ipowerweb) a few times, and have yet to recieve an informed answer.  Sigh.

Anyway, I have vdeck control panel, and cannot figure this out.  I have listmail installed, the sign-up works, the welcome letter shoots out.

Would it behoove to get the server analysis, or is there some light you can shed based on the limited info I've provided?

Thanks,
Natalie

For hands-on assistance you will need to order an analysis.  Of course, I am happy to troubleshoot this with you here in the forum, too.

You may want to try asking your host a very simple question:  "How do I set up a cron job?".  Once you know the method, if the ListMail default command does not work we might try a few alternatives.

Reliable Cron Service Solution
« Reply #2 on: April 04, 2005, 01:08:05 am »
I was having such difficulties with getting my host to run cron jobs, so I decided to use a remotely hosted service.

It is the best 10 bucks a month I've ever spent.  I just log in to my account, add a new cron and it starts working immediately.  No waiting!  The service allows you to run up to 10 cron jobs, each one at any time of day and as many times as you want.

The way it works is you just need a script on your server that does the actual work, sometimes called an activation script.  You just plug in the full URL to this script in your cron job, and you're good to go!

The service:
http://www.hostedcron.com

The activation script for Listmail(to be run in your cron job):
http://yoursite.com/mail/dailymail.php?pw=YourDailyMailPass

This should do it!  I've been using Hostedcron for almost a year now, and they haven't missed a single day!  I even have one cron job that runs one of my scripts every two hours- to clean one of my mailboxes!

Hi David,

You may want to consider switching hosts since ListMail-supportive hosting plus unlimited cron commands can be had for as low as $7.95/mo (ie DreamHost).

Of course, if you are happy with your current service(s) then you should stay. :)
